REMOVING OS/2 FROM YOUR SYSTEM Disclaimer: This procedure is provided "as-is", without any warranty and is subject to change. It may contain technical and typographical errors. Please contact the appropriate software support center before using this procedure. OS/2 V2.X Should it become necessary to completely remove OS/2 from your system, either to reinstall OS/2 or to install DOS/Windows, the recommended method is format the OS/2 partition and then install the desired Operating System. However, there may be some circumstances where reformatting the harddrive is impractical. If this is the case, you can use the following procedure to "surgically remove" OS/2 from your system. This procedure assumes that you are familiar with using DOS commands, and that OS/2 is installed on Drive C:. 1. If your system does not have Dual Boot installed, create or obtain a bootable DOS 6.x diskette with the DELTREE.EXE and ATTRIB.EXE files present on the diskette. 2. Boot the system with this diskette or Dual Boot to DOS(if present). 3. DELTREE the following directories: C:\OS2 C:\PSFONTS C:\SPOOL C:\MMOS2 ** The C:\MMOS2 Directory will only be present if Multimedia Presentation Manager for OS/2 has been installed. 4. Type the following commands and answer Yes to the prompts generated: DELTREE C:\DESKTOP* DELTREE C:\NOWHERE* 5. Use the ATTRIB command to remove the system, hidden, and read-only attributes from all files in the root directory. 6. Erase the following files from the root directory: OS2KRNL OS2LDR OS2LDR.MSG OS2BOOT OS2VER OS2DUMP When deleting the following files, the '?' is displayed as a blank character. The '?' serves as a single character wildcard allowing you to delete these files. To delete these files, type the following commands: ATTRIB -S -H -R *.?SF ERASE *.?SF Erase the following files of Multimedia Presentation Manager for OS/2 was installed: MMUNIMRI.DLL MMUNINST.EXE Delete the following files if Dual Boot is not present: CONFIG.SYS AUTOEXEC.BAT 7. Reboot with the OS/2 Installation Diskette. Insert Diskette #1 when prompted. At the gray "welcome ..." screen, hit ESC to get to a command prompt. Remove Diskette #1 and insert Diskette #2. Type CHKDSK C: /F and press ENTER. This should clean up any leftover extended attribute pointers. OS/2 WARP (Select-A-System preload) Use the following procedure to remove OS/2 WARP from any IBM system that came with DOS/Windows and OS/2 WARP preloaded on it. 1. If not already booted to DOS/Windows, then have the customer dual boot back to DOS/Windows. 2. Allow the system to boot all the way to the Windows Program Manager. 3. Find the "OS/2 WARP" Group within Windows. 4. Double Click on the "Delete OS/2 WARP" icon. Answer OK to the following prompts. 5. Exit from Windows. 6. Type the following commands: ATTRIB -S -H -R *.?SF DEL *.?SF 7. OS/2 WARP has now been removed. OS/2 WARP (not preloaded or not Select-A-System) If it should become necessary for some reason to remove OS/2 WARP entirely from the Hard Drive, you can use the OSDELETE program provided on Utility Diskette #3. This procedure will remove all traces of OS/2 Drive. To remove OS/2 completely from the Hard Drive perform the following steps: 1. Create the utility diskettes by using the provided utility in the System Setup folder. 2. If Dual Boot is installed, Dual Boot to DOS. 3. Reboot the system from the Utility Diskettes. 4. Follow the prompts until you get to an A: Prompt. 5. After you get to an A: prompt, remove Diskette #2 and insert Diskette #3. 6. Type OSDELETE C: and press ENTER. 7. Manually remove anything that OSDELETE missed, such as extra NOWHERE, DESKTOP, or MMOS2 directories by typing the following commands and answering Yes to the prompts generated: DELTREE C:\DESKTOP* DELTREE C:\NOWHERE* DELTREE C:\MMOS2* 8. Type the following commands: ATTRIB -S -H -R *.?SF DEL *.?SF 9. Remove any of the BonusPak directories that are present (see next section). 10. Run CHKDSK C: /F to remove any pointers to Extended Attributes. ** NOTE: If you perform the following procedures and still have difficulties with OS/2, IBM Technical Support may require you to reformat and reinstall before proceeding further. The above procedures are not guaranteed to work, and may not solve all file corruption problems, especially those due to bad sectors on the Hard Drive. MANUALLY REMOVING THE BONUS-PAK. If you are manually removing OS/2 WARP then there are several directories that may or may not be present. Whether these directories are present depends upon whether the specified component of the OS/2 WARP BonusPak has been installed. Following is a list of the directories that are used by default when the BonusPak is installed. Use the DELTREE command to delete the following directories: C:\CSERVOS2 C:\FAXWOS2 (Select-A-System only) C:\FAXWORKS (Normal Default) C:\HALITE C:\IBMWORKS C:\OS2TOOLS C:\P2P C:\TCPIP C:\VIEWER These directories will need to be deleted in order to completely remove OS/2 WARP from a system that had the BonusPak installed on it. All IBM Select-A-System preloads have the complete BonusPak installed on them.
