BIOS update for IBM(R) Aptiva(R) 2190-2XX computers - README version BKREN09A This package updates the basic input/output system (BIOS) on Aptiva(R) model 2190-2XX. BIOS is programming that controls low-level hardware operations, including interactions with diskette drives, hard disk drives, and the keyboard. The BIOS is stored on a chip. Your computer uses flash BIOS, which can be updated through a program on a flash diskette so that you do not have to replace the BIOS chip to update the BIOS. Note: Make note of any settings you have changed in the BIOS Configuration Utility. These settings may have to be re-entered after updating the BIOS. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- Installing this update involves creating a BIOS flash diskette and running the flash program from the diskette. Before you begin, have a blank 1.44 MB diskette ready. 1. Click Start, highlight Find, then click Files and Folders. 2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type B6JT00A.EXE in the search box, then click Find Now. This will locate the B6JT00A.EXE file you just downloaded. 4. Double-click the icon for B6JT00A.EXE. 5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be extracted to the diskette. Installing the update --------------------- To install the update, do the following: 1. Close all open applications. 2. Leave the diskette in the A: drive, and shut down and restart the computer to start the BIOS flash program. 3. Press the Spacebar when you see: *************************************************************** *** This program will now update the BIOS of your Aptiva. *** *** Please refer to the readme.txt file included with this *** *** diskette for further information. *** *************************************************************** Press any key to continue. 4. Do not do anything until you see: ************************************************************* * Remove the diskette from Drive A: and Reboot the system * ************************************************************* 5. Remove the flash diskette from the diskette drive, and restart the computer. The update is now complete. Testing for successful installation ----------------------------------- To verify that the BIOS update was successful, do the following: 1. From the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 98 desktop, click Start, highlight Programs, then click PC-Doctor. 2. Click Aptiva System Information. 3. Verify that the BIOS version is BKREN09A. Issues Resolved By This Update ------------------------------ This update resolves the following technical limitation(s). 1. Support for hard drivers larger than 32GB. Technical Limitations --------------------- This update has the following known technical limitations. 1, When adding or removing IDE devices, the system will not recognize the new device if the user attempts to access the "CMOS Setup Utility" (BIOS) before the system has completed the IDE device re-detection process. Do not attempt to enter the "CMOS Setup Utility" (BIOS) immediately following a change of IDE devices, instead wait for the system to recognize the new device before attempting to access the CMOS Setup Utility" (BIOS)..
