Aptiva 2193 and 2196 BIOS update README This package performs a flash update of the basic input/output system (BIOS) that controls your IBM(R) Aptiva(R) computer. NOTE: BIOS is programming that controls low-level hardware operations, including interactions with diskette drives, hard disk drives, and the keyboard. The BIOS is stored on a chip. Your computer uses flash BIOS, which can be updated through a program on a flash diskette so that you do not have to replace the BIOS chip to update the BIOS. This update package is intended for IBM Aptiva machine types 2193-xx and 2196-xx. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- 1. Click Start -> Find -> Files and folders. 2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type pqjt12a.exe in the search box, then click Find Now. This will locate the pqjt12a.exe file you just downloaded. 4. Double-click the icon for pqjt12a.exe. 5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be extracted to the diskette. Installing the update --------------------- 1. Close all open applications. 2. Leaving the diskette inserted in the diskette drive, Shutdown and restart your computer. 3. When prompted to select whether to update the BIOS or update the serial and model number, update the BIOS. A message is displayed stating "The system POST/BIOS is being updated. This may take up to 2 minutes. Do not power off or restart the system during this procedure. If the level on the diskette is older than the ROM, a message is displayed stating "The POST/BIOS in the system is a newer version than that on the diskette. If you continue, the older version will replace the newer version in the system." 4. If you press Enter, a message is displayed stating "The system POST/BIOS is being updated. This may take up to 2 minutes. Do not power off or restart the system during this procedure." When the update reaches completion a message is displayed stating "The flash update is now complete." 5. When prompted, remove the diskette from the diskette drive, and restart the computer. The update is now complete.
