Select Control Panel from the Main group. 2. Select the Display icon. 3. Select Change Display Type. 4. Select Change from the Adapter Type area. 5. Select Other. 6. Place the Windows NT 3.5x and 4.0 Installation Disk into drive A. 7. Select Install and click on Yes when the Installing Driver dialog box appears. 8. When the Windows NT Setup dialog box appears, select drive A, and click on Continue. A message appears stating that the drivers were successfully installed. 9. Click on OK. 10. Restart Windows NT 3.5x and 4.0. 3.0 Setting the Resolution and Color Depth ___________________________________________ 1. Select Control Panel from the Main group. 2. Select Display icon. 3. Select Color Palette and select 16 colors, 256 colors, 65536, or 16 million colors. 4. To select Desktop resolution size, go to the Desktop area and use the slide bar to change resolution to 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768,1280x1024, or 1600 x 1200. 5. Select Test to test the resolution. If the display test screen is good, select Yes when the Test Mode dialog box appears. If the display test screen is bad, select No. Windows NT gives you an error message. 6. If the display screen was good and you selected Yes, Windows NT 3.5x and 4.0 prompts you to restart Windows. 3.1 Changing Refresh Rate, Color Depth and Resolution On the Fly without rebooting Only Windows NT 4.0 supports changing refresh rate, color depth and resolution on the fly. 1. Select Control Panel from the Main group. 2. Select Display icon. 3. Select Color Palette and select 16 colors, 256 colors, 65536, or 16 million colors. 4. To select Desktop resolution size, go to the Desktop area and use the slide bar to change resolution to 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768,1280x1024, or 1600 x 1200. 5. Click Apply button to Change refresh rate, color depth and resolution without rebooting your computer. 3.2 DDC Monitor Detection VESA Display Data Channel DDC detection is possible in Windows NT. This feature enables Windows NT to query the monitor, and if the monitor is DDC compliant, to return specific detailed information about the monitor. This information includes the manufacturer, model number, maximum resolution, maximum refresh rates, and other monitor-specific details. To use DDC, repeat steps 1 and 2 from section 3.0 above. You will see the Display Settings dialog box. If your monitor is DDC compliant, the Color Palette, Desktop Area, and Refresh Frequency drop-down boxes will display what your monitor supports. However, if you select the button marked List All Modes, you will see everything that the graphics system supports. These may not be the same settings your monitor supports. For example, if your monitor's highest resolution is 1024x768, that is the maximum setting you will see listed in the Desktop Area drop-down box. However, under List All Modes you will see higher resolutions because the graphics chip can support them. If you select an unsupported mode from List All Modes, your monitor might display the graphics improperly. If you upgrade to a DDC monitor that supports higher resolutions, the available settings in the Desktop Area drop-down box will change to reflect the new resolutions. This same concept applies to Color Palette and Refresh Frequency. 3.2 Interaction of the Refresh Frequency, Color Palette, and Desktop Area When you use the values available in the Color Palette, Desktop Area, and Refresh Frequency drop-down boxes it is important to understand the interaction among them. The Desktop Area, or resolution, determines the availability of refresh rates and color depths. If you set the Desktop Area to 640x480, all refresh rates are available in the Refresh Frequency field, including 85 Hz. However, if you set the Desktop Area to 1280x1024, the refresh rates are reduced in number, and 85 Hz is no longer available. To use the higher refresh rates, you must reduce the size of the Desktop Area. Color Palette, or color depth, is not directly linked to the selected refresh rate. For example, if the Desktop Area is set to 1024x800 and you select a Color Palette of 16.8 million colors and then a refresh rate of 85 Hz, the Color Palette is reset to 256 colors. This is because the monitor and graphics systems might support 16.8 million colors and might support 85 Hz, but not 16.8 million colors at 85 Hz. By understanding the interaction and interdependencies and adjusting the various display settings, you can arrive at a comfortable display setting for you work. 4.0 Trademarks ______________ IBM is a trademark of the IBM Corporation in the United States and/or other countries.
