The drivers are designed exclusively to support FireGL™ Series Graphics Accelerators with Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems, and they do not support any other type or brand of graphics card or operating system. If you are replacing your existing graphics solution with a new FireGL™ Series card, then please refer to your computer User's Guide for graphics card installation instructions. Before you begin, make sure you have a video driver that supports the new card. Next, un-install the current driver before powering down the machine and removing the existing graphics card. (See section 3 below for instructions on removing a video driver.) The new IBM FireGL™ Series Graphics Accelerator card must be installed before the video driver for it is loaded. Also, anti-virus software should be disabled, and there should be no other applications running during installation. Re-activate the anti-virus software after driver installation is complete. 2.0 CHANGE HISTORY ------------------ This is first release for ATI Fire GL 3100 adapter. - - 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- 3.1 Menu-Controlled Driver Installation 3.2 Unattended Driver Installation Your computer system shipped with the graphics software drivers for the IBM FireGL™ Series card pre-installed. You need the information in this section on re-installation of the basic driver software for Windows 2000 and Windows XP only if you are re-installing the operating system. For your convenience the following procedures describe how to install the graphics driver software. The Unattended Video Driver Installation described in section 2.2 allows you to install the drivers and configure your monitor settings via command-line entries. You can also request 'silent' mode to keep diagnostic messages from being written to the monitor during installation. ____________________________________________________________________ 3.1 - Menu-Controlled Driver Installation ____________________________________________________________________ 1. Make sure that you are logged onto your computer with Administrator rights. 2. IMPORTANT: If there is another IBM ATI FireGL™ Display Driver currently installed, it must first be removed before proceeding (see section 3, below). 3. To perform an unattended un-install, open a DOS command window, navigate to the location of the setup.exe file for the driver, and type: setup.exe -uui FireGL™ driver installation will proceed without prompts, and reboot proceeds automatically. 5.0 Unattended Mode (Please provide if product requires this information) ------------------------------- see section 4.2 5.5 CHANGING THE VIDEO SETTINGS ____________________________________________________________________ It may be necessary to customize the video settings of the FireGL™ Unified Driver after it is installed to optimize for a particular software application or a connected display monitor. The most common method of accessing the driver settings is through the Display Properties window. ____________________________________________________________________ 4.1– Menu-Controlled Driver Options ____________________________________________________________________ 1. Open the Display Properties window: either open the Display icon on the Windows Control Panel or right-click the mouse anywhere on the Windows desktop background and select "Properties" at the bottom of the pop-up window. 2. Click on the "Settings" tab. You will see the settings for "Screen resolution" (e.g. 1280x1024) and "Color quality" (e.g. Highest (32 bit)). 3. If you change any settings, click "Apply" and then "OK". 4. The "Advanced" button will open the ATI Display Driver Panel and allow fine-tuning, such as setting the driver application profile via the Configuration tab, or setting the screen refresh rate via the Monitor tab. 5. After making changes restart your computer if prompted to do so. ____________________________________________________________________ 4.2 – Dual-Head Monitor Configuration ____________________________________________________________________ To install and configure an additional display, first connect a second monitor to the unused VGA or DVI-I port on the IBM ATI FireGL™ graphics card. You may need a VGA-to-DVI-I adapter. Power on the second monitor, and open the Display dialog via the Display Properties window: - Right-click on the Windows desktop and select 'Properties' at the bottom of the pop-up menu. Clone Mode ---------------- In Clone mode, the second monitor is automatically set to the same resolution and refresh rate as the primary display, and you see a duplicate image of what is displayed on the first monitor. To activate the second monitor in Clone mode, begin by choosing the 'Settings' tab of the Display Properties menu, the 'Advanced' button on the lower right, and finally select the ‘Displays’ tab. You will see two displays listed and one will be inactive, denoted by a red upper-left corner of the monitor pane. Click on that corner and it will turn green, thus indicating an active display. To change the resolution of the secondary display, first click ‘OK’ in the Displays dialog and return to the Settings dialog of the Display Properties menu. Then click on the monitor icon labeled ‘2’ and set the resolution and color depth using the controls below it. To change the refresh rate, choose the ‘Monitor’ tab and select from the refresh rate pull-down menu. If you click the ‘Identify’ button on the Settings dialog while in Clone mode, you will see a large, white numeral ‘1’ displayed on both monitor screens. Extended Mode --------------------- In Extended mode, the Windows desktop expands horizontally onto the second monitor. For instance, if you start the mouse cursor in the primary display and move it off the screen to the right, it will appear on the secondary display. Similarly, you can drag a window from the primary display to the secondary display. To enter Extended mode, start on the Settings dialog of the Display Properties menu and click on the monitor icon numbered ‘2’. Set the desired Resolution and Color quality, and then click to place a checkmark in the box labeled ‘Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor’. Click ‘Apply’ and then click ‘Yes’. Click the ‘Identify’ button to see which monitor is primary ‘1’ and which is secondary ‘2’. The primary and secondary designations can be changed by first choosing one monitor icon or the other in the Settings dialog, and then clicking on the ‘Advanced’ button, followed by the ‘Displays’ tab: Each Monitor pane on the Displays dialog shows resolution, refresh rate, and two buttons—numbered 1 and 2. You can toggle between primary and secondary displays by using these numbered buttons. To accept a change, click ‘Apply’, then ‘Yes’ and finally ‘OK’. Verify the change by clicking ‘Identity’ on the Settings dialog. ____________________________________________________________________ 5 - SUPPORTED RESOLUTIONS, COLOR DEPTHS, AND REFRESH RATES ____________________________________________________________________ The resolutions and refresh rates supported by FireGL™ video adapters depend on the monitor that is selected. To display the resolutions that are supported and the maximum vertical refresh rate for each of your monitors, refer to the 'Monitor' dialog in the 'Display Properties' window: - Right-click on the Windows desktop and select 'Properties' at the bottom of the pop-up menu. - Choose the 'Settings' tab, the 'Advanced' button on the lower right, and finally select the 'Monitor' tab. The tables below contains screen resolution, color depth, and vertical refresh rate for all video modes supported under Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.
