Please obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.06a (or higher), and update the Embedded Controller Program. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update the BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the system BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. There is no way to exit from this condition except initialization of CMOS. - (Fix) Brightness level setting of high is automatically disabled, if brightness level is changed from ThinkPad utility. - (Fix) If the system is docked to the docking station which includes a HDD, then Hibernation on APM operating system may cause system hang. <1.05 - 1AET48WW> - (Fix) Password is requested twice if F1 is pressed on the power on password prompt. - (Fix) If Maximum Performance is selected for battery and Battery Optimized Performance is selected for AC using SpeedStep applet on Windows 95 or NT 4.0, it was not reflected to BIOS setting correctly. - (Fix) If critical hibernation occur on Windows 2000 or Windows Me, SpeedStep transition fails after hibernation wakeup. - (Fix) If system is turned off immediately during first power on process, it may cause power on hang at next time. <1.06 - 1AET49WW> - (Fix) Abnormal screen appear on LG XGA panel when system is rebooted. <1.07 - 1AET50WW> - (Fix) Windows NT boot is stopped by timer canceled at boot menu while an external keybaord is attached.(Also at PCDOS boot menu) - (Fix) PC cards do not work after reboot. - (Fix) Password is required twice if user press F1 key when password prompt appear. - (Fix) USB FDD boot does not work after reboot(Windows XP). - (Fix) Some HDD partition information causes boot failure. - (Fix) Hibernation on an APM operating system may cause the system to hang if construction of hibernation file is unique. - (Fix) System did not wait long enough for the command that stops the HDD spindle motor during a system power off. <1.11 - (Fix) Boot priority for the network boot does not become to the default setting, if an F9 key is pressed twice in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. - (Fix) Windows NT, 2000 nor XP won't start if a USB BIOS is set to disabled in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. <1.18 - 1AET62WW> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with the Embedded Controller Program Version 1.06a (or higher). - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) The system may resume normal operation from standby mode when the LCD panel is opened even though "Do nothing" for "When I close the lid of my portable computer" is selected in the Power Options. - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) The system may hang when the LCD is closed while the system is entering standby mode, and "Hibernation" for "When I close the lid of my portable computer" is selected in the Power Options. - (New) Enhancement of the battery control. <1.20 - 1AET64WW> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with the Embedded Controller Program Version 1.06a (or higher). - (New) WakeOnLAN function updated. Installation instructions ------------------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display them on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\1auj20us.exe) Then click OK. Hint: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\1auj20us.exe -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 10. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press the F9 key to load the default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press the F10 key to save the default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. The versions of BIOS and Embedded Controller Program can be viewed by entering IBM BIOS Setup Utility. To enter the IBM BIOS Setup Utility: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check the BIOS Version and the Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer.
