[Problem fixes] Nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: - This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.08 (or higher). Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.08 (or higher), and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update BIOS first. - Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID 239887. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS Notes: - If you use your computer satisfactory now, it is not necessarily required to update the BIOS. Use it as it is. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. There are three ways for installation. (A) Automatic update with ThinkPad Software Installer (B) Manual update (C) Unattended update (A) Automatic Update Use the ThinkPad Software Installer version 3.01.0503 or higher. The ThinkPad Software Installer will check both installed program in your ThinkPad and IBM Web site. Then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Refer to the ThinkPad Software Installer package for details. (B) Manual Update Refer to the Manual Update section. (C) Unattended Update Refer to the Unattended Update section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings; 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. (The Startup menu was removed.) <2.14> (1QET77WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.04. - (New) Support for EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) Rev. 1.3 - (Fix) The IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter with the old device driver (version 2.4.1.7 or lower) does not work with the BIOS 2.13a (1QET76WW). - (Fix) The computer may be immediately powered off at the password prompt screen after resuming normal operation from hibernation mode if the Power-on Password is set and "Require password after hibernate" option in the "IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set to Enabled. - (Fix) The correct passphrase is not accepted at the passphrase prompt screen of UVM (User Verification Manager) function of IBM Client Security Software after resuming normal operation from standby mode if all of the following conditions are met. 1. "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" option in the "IBM BIOS Setup Utility" is set to Disabled. 2. In the Windows XP's Power Options properties, both "System standby" and "System hibernates" for "Running on batteries" are set. The timer setting of "System hibernates" is longer than that of "System standby". 3. The computer is running on the battery. 4. The computer goes into standby mode by following timer setting of the "System Standby" option, and then is in idling state more than the time which is set in the "System hibernates" option. 5. Let the computer resume normal operation from standby mode. <2.13a> (1QET76WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.04. - (New) Support for a new option, "Require password after hibernate" in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This is to enable/disable for the computer to prompt for Power-on password when the system starts from hibernate. Go to the Require password after hibernate option under Security and Password in IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. - (New) Support for a new option, "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This is to enable/disable scheduled wake up events if the computer is not connected to the AC adapter. Go to the Timer Wake with Battery Operation option under Config and Power in IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. - (Fix) The color of Intel Centrino logo which is displayed during the system boot is changed on some models. - (Fix) (Windows XP) The computer may fail to resume normal operation from standby mode via network while the computer is connected to the network through network PC Card in the docking station. To enable this function, enable the Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby option in the Power Management tab under Network Adapter, Network PC Card device and Properties in Device Manager. - (Fix) Throughput of some CardBus cards or USB devices may be slow. <2.11> (1QET73WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Support for IBM Rescue and Recovery. <2.10a> (1QET72WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Support for ThinkPad X31 2004 spring models. - (New) Support for new mini-PCI wireless network device "802.11 b/g mPCI Adapter". - (New) Support for user-customized model number (for administrative purpose). - (Fix) The following error may be displayed during the BIOS update. EFlash Error DeviceIoControl() returns 1450 Following the instruction on the screen to reboot the computer does not fix the problem. Note: The error number for this problem was changed as follows, and the problem can be resolved by rebooting the computer. EFlash Error DeviceIoControl() returns 2 You will never see the same problem after rebooting. (Note) Refer to the Restrictions section. - (New) (Windows XP, Windows 2000) Enhancement on password security function. <2.01a> (1QET63WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (Fix) Fix for thermal sensor issue of Intel 855PM. <2.00a> (1QET61WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Support for IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter. - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) The system may resume normal operation from standby mode when the LCD panel is opened even though "Do nothing" for [When LCD Close] is selected in the Power Options. <1.04a> (1QET36WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Functionality update for Access IBM Predesktop Area. - (Fix) Setting of Access IBM Predesktop Area is not copied by ThinkPad Remote CMOS Update Utility for Remote Deployment Manager. - (Fix) (Windows XP) Some multi-function type of CardBus cards may not work after resuming normal operation from standby mode. - (Fix) The boot order of network devices under Startup and Network in IBM BIOS Setup Utility becomes changed from default if the F9 key to load default configuration is pressed twice. - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) If the computer is attached to an UltraBase X3 or Docking Station option and when the second hard disk drive with the hard disk password installed is hot- attached to the option while the system is running, a hard disk password prompt for the second hard disk does not appear after the system is restarted. - (Fix) The system may hang during system boot or may not be booted from the USB diskette drive if both a USB mouse and a USB diskette drive are attached to the computer. <1.03> (1QET34WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Function to disable the option ROM of internal Ethernet adapter card, in order to expand usable memory area by DOS. (This can be done by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in IBM BIOS Setup Utility.) - (Fix) (DOS) The screen becomes blank or white when Korean DOS environment starts up (with loading mshbios.com). - (Fix) Screen expansion (HV expansion) is always enabled if a power- on password or hard disk password is set. - (Fix) Some of Item Specific Help messages in IBM BIOS Setup Utility are incorrect. <1.02> (1QET33WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Pressing F11 key at power-on time can run IBM Product Recovery program, as well as pressing the Access ThinkPad button. - (Fix) (Windows 98) If the system goes into suspend or hibernation mode while it accesses the HDD so often, resuming normal operation from the mode may fail. - --- Processor family value in SMBIOS for Intel Pentium M processor is changed. <1.01> (1QET32WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) The design of Access IBM Predesktop Area screen, which is shown after pressing the "Access IBM" button, is changed to prevent the system from going into suspend or hibernation mode. (This is to avoid some problems.) - (Fix) On the model with IBM Security Chip installed, selecting some items in IBM BIOS Setup Utility may cause system hang if the IBM Security Chip option in IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set to Enabled. - (Fix) Some of the memory controller settings are changed. <1.00b> (1QET31WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) (Initial release) Support for ThinkPad X31. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MANUAL UPDATE Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 2. Start Windows 98 or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 3. Save the BIOS Update Utility file (e.g. xxxxxxxx.exe) on the Windows Desktop or in the hard disk drive. 4. Double-click the saved file on the Windows Desktop, or start Explorer, open the folder where the file was saved and then double-click the saved file. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 6. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 7. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 8. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Finally delete the file saved in the step 3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNATTENDED UPDATE This procedure is intended only for system administrators. At the command prompt, specify the BIOS Update Utility file name with options -s -a -s (e.g. C:\Temp\xxxxxxxx.EXE -s -a -s) and press the Enter key to start installation process. If you have saved the file to a different location, specify the location, instead. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BIOS INFORMATION Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*2) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*3) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Notes: *2: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. But, if disabled, both Wake-on-LAN and PXE boot functions do not work. *3: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Even if disabled, the USB devices work under the Windows environment. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RESTRICTIONS (For ThinkPad X31 2003 fall models and 2004 spring models) Passwords can be set with passphrase feature, however, that supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP only.
