For the other machine types of ThinkPad R51, please get the package for them. - This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 (or higher). Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 (or higher), and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad R51 (Machine Type 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895) (Note) Machine Type 1829, 1830, 1831 and 1836 of ThinkPad R51 family are not supported. For those machine types, obtain the package for them. This is to enable/disable for the computer to prompt for the Power-on password when the system starts from hibernate. Go to the Require password after hibernate option under Security and Password in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. - (New) Support for a new option, "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This is to enable/disable scheduled wake up events if the computer is not connected to the AC adapter. Go to the Timer Wake with Battery Operation option under Config and Power in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility, and refer to Item Specific Help for details. <1.16 (1VET58WW)> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.02. - (Fix) The computer may be immediately powered off at the password prompt screen after returning from hibernation if the Power- on Password is set and the "Require password after hibernate" option in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set to Enabled. - (Fix) The correct passphrase is not accepted at the passphrase prompt screen of the UVM (User Verification Manager) function of the IBM Client Security Software after returning from standby mode if all of the following conditions are met: 1. "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" option in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set to disabled. 2. In the Windows XP Power Options properties, both "System standby" and "System hibernates" for "Running on batteries" are set. The timer setting of "System hibernates" is longer than that of "System standby". 3. The computer is running on the battery. 4. The computer goes into standby mode by following the timer setting of the "System Standby" option, and then is in idling state longer than the time which is set in the "System hibernates" option. 5. Let the computer resume normal operation from standby mode. - --- Support for a new revision of power management chip on the system board. <1.17 (1VET59WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 (or higher). - (New) Internal Network device enable/disable function is added in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. - (New) Internal Wireless device enable/disable function is added in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. - (New) Intel Centrino Logo is updated. - (New) Support for Bluetooth models of ThinkPad R51 (M/T 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894 and 2895). - (Fix) The memory data will be corrupted if timer resume is aborted when "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" option in IBM BIOS Setup Utility is disabled. - (Fix) The system hangs when booted from the 2nd FDD in boot order. - (Fix) Old version of IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter software (Version 2.4.1.7 or elders) may not work. <1.19 (1VET61WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 (or higher). - (Fix) System may hang with E228 at POST. Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\1VUJ15US.EXE) Then click OK. Hint: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\1VUJ15US.EXE -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 10. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing BIOS ----------------- In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings; 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following BIOS. Also the supported versions of Embedded Controller Program are shown bellow. The versions of BIOS and Embedded Controller Program can be viewed by entering IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CCFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS CD000-CEFFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*1) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS (Note) *1: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Even if disabled, the USB devices work under the Windows environment. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. CF000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
