What This Utility Does ---------------------- This System Program Service Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller(EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad X60, X60s This package is compiled into an ISO format, which is compatible with CD writing software such as RecordNow!(*), and writable to a CD-R or a CD-RW disc. * If your RecordNow! CD writing program does not have a "Burn Image" entry, please upgrade RecordNow! from following site. http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-43887 A written CD-R or CD-RW disc will be bootable. It will boot from your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive(*) and run the update utility program. * Your ThinkPad may need to change the boot device setting to boot from an Optical Disc Drive. (EC) Making a CD-R or CD-RW disc to use ------------------------------------ This section provides instructions using the RecordNow! program to make a bootable CD. Please refer to your other product manuals when using other CD writing programs. 1. Make sure you have a ThinkPad with a CD-RW, DVD/CD-RW combo or DVD multi drive installed. Prepare a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc. 2. Download and extract the System Program Service Utility file from the Lenovo/IBM web site. 3. Run RecordNow! from the Windows Start/Programs menu. 4. Click Backup Projects from the tabs. (right most tab) 5. Click "Burn Image" project. Follow the process. 6. Choose the obtained ISO file in step 2 of this process to create your CD. Prepare the boot device ----------------------- The resulting CD-R or CD-RW disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models. Note: The System Program Service Utility bootable CD supports only the ThinkPad Ultrabay Optical Disc Drive in the ThinkPad Ultrabay. (Not in the Docking Station Ultra bay) Please confirm that an Optical Disc Drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup. 1. Power off the ThinkPad, if it is turned on. 2. Power on the ThinkPad. 3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. 4. Choose "Startup" from the menu 5. Choose "Boot" from the menu(*) 6. In "Boot Priority Order", set "ATAPI CD0" to the top of the list, "1". 7. Press F10 to save the new setup. 8. Power off or restart the system. *Note: Please write down the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list. Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Place the System Program Service Utility CD into your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive and turn on the computer. 4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 6. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the CD-R or CD-RW disc until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After information panel appears, remove the CD-R or CD-RW disc in the drive then press Enter key to restart the system. Do the following to make sure the BIOS is updated correctly. 7. Turn off the computer. 8. Turn on the computer. 9. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 10. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 11. Verify the BIOS Version. 12. Enter the BIOS Setup Utility, if you need to restore your original boot order. 13. Turn off the computer. Initializing BIOS ----------------- BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS setups: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password. 5. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 6. Select Yes. 7. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 8. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. Note: After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you had changed previously. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering BIOS Setup Utility. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 5. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 6. Turn off the computer. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the system program (BIOS) and others. C0000-CE7FF : Reserved for Video BIOS CE800-D07FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Notes: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D0800-DBFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
