What This Utility Does ---------------------- This System Program Service Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller(EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad X60, X60s The supported operating systems are as follows: - Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit - Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) - Microsoft Windows 2000 This package is compiled into an ISO format, which is compatible with CD writing software such as RecordNow!(*), and writable to a CD-R or a CD-RW disc. * If your RecordNow! CD writing program does not have a "Burn Image" entry, please upgrade RecordNow! from following site. http://www.lenovo.com/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-43887 A written CD-R or CD-RW disc will be bootable. It will boot from your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive(*) and run the update utility program. * Your ThinkPad may need to change the boot device setting to boot from an Optical Disc Drive. (BIOS) - (Fix) Docking system in the Dock/Mini Dock sometimes does not appear to be complete.(BIOS) - (Fix) When the Password reset service of BIOS Setup is enabled (BIOS Setup->Security->Password->Password reset service) and Passphrase is disabled (BIOS Setup->Security->Password->Using Passphrase), POP(Power On Password) or HDP(Hard Disk Password) may not be unlocked with a registered password by the Password reset service. (BIOS) - (Fix) Even if CD-ROM speed is set to "Silent mode" in BIOS Setup, the "Silent mode" may be changed to "Normal mode".(BIOS) - (Fix) The process to recognize the kind of adapter connecting the system just after the OS boot was improved. (EC) - (Fix) A POST error message at no bootable device was changed.(BIOS) - (Fix) Display switching to external Display or Projector via Presentation Director is sometimes failed . (BIOS) - (Fix) HDD reset may not be issued to secondary HDD of Ultrabase when communication reset is required. (BIOS) - (Fix) Entering standby may fail in a certain case. USB host controller setting is changed to fix. (BIOS) - (Fix) The EC intermittenly hangs. (ThinkLight does not light.) (EC) <1.10> - (New) Upgraded to the latest microcode for Intel Core processor. - (Fix) Timeout may take more than 30 seconds if PXE (Preboot eXecution Environment) network boot fails. (BIOS) - (Fix) POST1820 error occurs on the following system condition. - Wireless WAN model, and - WWAN is disabled by BIOS Setup or Wireless hardware switch. (BIOS Setup->Config-> Network->Internal Wireless Device), and - An external USB Finger Print reader is connected to the left side USB port of the system or any USB port in the docking station. (BIOS) - (Fix) When a system with a USB floppy drive in Ultrabase is hot-docked, the USB floppy drive is intermittently not recognized. (BIOS) - (Fix) The battery may not continue to be charged after the system was resumed from Suspend or Hibernation mode even if the battery was charged before entering the power saving mode. (EC) <2.00f> - (New) Support for ThinkPad X60/X60s 2006 autumn model <2.02> - (New) Support for new chipset/processor by SMBIOS - (Fix) Wrong data may be written to hard drive, when EMM386.EXE of IBM PC-DOS is used. (BIOS) <2.03> - (Fix) Windows desktop Icon location may be changed after Lid open/close. (BIOS) Note: To resolve this problem, after updating the BIOS with this package, the following display driver must be installed, again. Video driver Intel 900/950/910GML/915GM/940GML/945GM Version 6.14.10.4693 or higher <2.04> - (Fix) Needs to enter a BIOS supervisor password after BIOS update to 7BETB9WW/2.00f or later version from 7BET50WW/1.08 (or older version), if the BIOS supervisor password is set at BIOS update. Note that this problem does not occur, once the system booted with BIOS 7BETB9WW or later version. If your X60 runs without problems after installing 7BETC2WW/2.03, no need to update to 7B9ETC3WW/2.04. <2.05> - (New) Maximum Graphics Memory size increases to 224MB. (BIOS) - (Fix) If the computer is forcibly shut down by special conditions (such like the power button being pressed for seconds or the battery down in suspend mode), the computer may not work after power on. (BIOS) - (Fix) The computer may be shutdown by a certain 3G GPRS card in the PC card slot. (EC) - (Fix) Once Active Protection System is disabled, it cannot be enabled again until the system is restarted. (EC) <2.06> - (New) Support of Microsoft Windows Vista. (BIOS) - (New) Support of Intel(R) Virtulization Technology. A new Intel(R) Virtulization Technology option is added to CPU of Config menu in BIOS Setup Utility. Config->CPU->Intel(R) Virtulization Technology The Intel(R) Virtulization Technology option is always set to "disabled" after the BIOS was updated or flashed. The option needs to be set "enabled" if necessary after BIOS update/flash. (BIOS) - (Fix) POST error 1804 may appear at system power on with some types of USB devices. (BIOS) - (Fix) When EMM386.EXE is used at system boot from PC-DOS on a USB memory key, the system may hang or the wrong data may be accessed on the hard drive while reading or writing. (BIOS) <2.07> - (Fix) "SATA Controller Mode Option" is changed to "Compatibility" when the system boots up without primary Hard Drive. "SATA Controller Mode Option" is displayed in BIOS Setup Utility. "Config"->"Serial ATA(SATA)"->"SATA Controller Mode Option" (BIOS) - (Fix) The SMBIOS structure which represents Modem jack(RJ-11) is not displayed. (BIOS) <2.09> - (Fix) On a system with Windows Vista, the system may display the following error message during each power on, then cannot boot from the hard drive. 2100: Initialization error on HDD(Main hard disk drive) - (Fix) On a system with Windows Vista, the display resolution changes to VGA mode(640x480) after the LCD cover is closed and opened. (BIOS) Making a CD-R or CD-RW disc to use ------------------------------------ This section provides instructions using the RecordNow! program to make a bootable CD. Please refer to your other product manuals when using other CD writing programs. 1. Make sure you have a ThinkPad with a CD-RW, DVD/CD-RW combo or DVD multi drive installed. Prepare a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc. 2. Download and extract the System Program Service Utility file from the Lenovo web site. 3. Run RecordNow! from the Windows Start/Programs menu. 4. Click Backup Projects from the tabs. (right most tab) 5. Click "Burn Image" project. Follow the process. 6. Choose the obtained ISO file in step 2 of this process to create your CD. Prepare the boot device ----------------------- The resulting CD-R or CD-RW disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models. Note: The System Program Service Utility bootable CD supports only the ThinkPad Ultrabay Optical Disc Drive in the ThinkPad Ultrabay. (Not in the Docking Station Ultra bay) Please confirm that an Optical Disc Drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup. 1. Power off the ThinkPad, if it is turned on. 2. Power on the ThinkPad. 3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. 4. Choose "Startup" from the menu 5. Choose "Boot" from the menu(*) 6. In "Boot Priority Order", set "ATAPI CD0" to the top of the list, "1". 7. Press F10 to save the new setup. 8. Power off or restart the system. *Note: Please write down the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list. Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Place the System Program Service Utility CD into your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive and turn on the computer. 4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 6. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the CD-R or CD-RW disc until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After information panel appears, remove the CD-R or CD-RW disc in the drive then press Enter key to restart the system. Do the following to make sure the BIOS is updated correctly. 7. Turn off the computer. 8. Turn on the computer. 9. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 10. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 11. Verify the BIOS Version. 12. Enter the BIOS Setup Utility, if you need to restore your original boot order. 13. Turn off the computer. Initializing BIOS ----------------- BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password. 5. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 6. Select Yes. 7. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 8. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. Note: After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you had changed previously. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering BIOS Setup Utility. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the system program (BIOS) and others. C0000-CE7FF : Reserved for Video BIOS CE800-D07FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Notes: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D0800-DBFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
