---------------------------------------------------------------------- Software Name BIOS (ISO format for bootable CD) Support models ThinkPad Z61e, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t Operating Systems Not applicable Version 2.12 Issue date December 18, 2006 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES This package is to update the BIOS (including system program and Embedded Controller program) stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. In order to enable the BIOS update by booting the computer from the CD-R/CD-RW disc, disregarding the operating system, this package is compiled into an ISO format which is compatible with CD-R/CD-RW writing software. For that purpose, it is necessary to have the CD-R/CD-RW writing software (with CD-R/CD-RW creation function from the ISO image) prepared separately. This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE [Important Updates] Nothing. [New functions or enhancements] Nothing. [Problem fixes] - If the computer is forcibly shut down by special conditions (such like, pressing the power button for a few seconds or battery down in suspend mode), the computer may not work after power on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED There are two ways for version check. (A) On Windows (B) On BIOS Setup Utility (A) On Windows 1. Start the ThinkPad Configuration program. Click Start, select All Programs (or Programs), select ThinkVantage, and then click ThinkPad Configuration. 2. Click the System Information icon. 3. Click the BIOS information tab. BIOS version and Embedded Controller version will be displayed. 4. Click OK to exit. (B) On BIOS Setup Utility 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES 1. In order to enable the BIOS update by booting the computer from the CD-R/CD-RW disc, it is necessary to prepare the CD-R/CD-RW writing software, such like RecordNow! writing software. If your RecordNow! does not have a "Burn Image" entry, upgrade RecordNow! from following site. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-43887 2. The CD-R/CD-RW disc for the BIOS update does not support any optical disc drives connected through USB devices, PC Cards, CardBus cards or installed into the Ultrabay of Docking Station. It only supports internal CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo and DVD Multi drives for ThinkPad. 3. To boot the computer from the internal optical disc drive, your ThinkPad computer may need to change the boot device setting. Refer to the "Prepare boot device" section in this document. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MAKING BIOS CD The bootable CD-R/CD-RW created here is called "BIOS CD." This section assumes to use Internet Explorer, Explorer and RecordNow! (CD-R/CD-RW writing software). Downloading files 1. Click once on the underlined file name with the left mouse button. Once this is done, a pop-up window will appear. 2. In this pop-up window, choose (using the left mouse button) the directory you would like to download the file to and click the "Save" button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete without your assistance. 3. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully. Creating bootable CD-R/CD-RW disc 4. Make sure the internal CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo or DVD Multi drive for ThinkPad is installed into the computer. Also make sure RecordNow! is installed. Prepare a blank CD-R/CD-RW disc whose size can be 650MB or 700MB. 5. Start RecordNow!. 6. Click the Backup Projects tab. 7. Click the Burn Image project. 8. Locate the xxxxxxxx.ISO file you obtained in step 2. 9. Follow instructions on the screen. The bootable CD-R/CD-RW created is called "BIOS CD". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATING THE BIOS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter, a charged battery pack and an either of internal CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo or DVD Multi drive for ThinkPad to to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.
