Firmware updates for the Samsung 8X DVD-ROM drive
version BI24

This package installs an update to the Samsung 8X DVD-ROM drive
that comes preinstalled in your IBM(R) computer. This update
requires one blank 1.44MB floppy diskette.

This update package is intended for IBM Aptiva 2178-xxx and
2198-xxx systems as well as IBM NetVista 2251-xxx, 2271-xxx,
6269-xxx, 6568-xxx, 6569-xxx, 6578-xxx, 6579-xxx, 6648-xxx,
6649-xxx, 6830-xxx, 6831-xxx, 6840-xxx, and 6841-xxx systems
that come with a Samsung 8X DVD-ROM preinstalled.

Print this file so that you can refer to it during the
installation.


How to determine whether this update applies to your machine
------------------------------------------------------------
To determine the firmware level of your DVD-ROM using Windows
98 or Windows Me

1. Click Start, highlight Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System.
3. Click Device Manager.
4. Double-click CD-ROM.
5. Click on the Samsung DVD-ROM.
6. Click Properties.
7. Click Settings.
8. If the firmware level is lower than "bi24", you should upgrade.
   Follow the steps shown below in Extracting the update.


To determine the firmware level of your DVD-ROM using NT4.0

1. Click Start, highlight Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Click SCSI Adapters.
3. Expand all options until you see the CD-ROM. Click on the CD-ROM.
4. Click Properties.
5. Click Settings.
6. If the firmware level is lower than "bi24", you should upgrade.
   Follow the steps shown below in Extracting the update.


To determine the firmware level of your DVD-ROM using Windows 2000

1. Power off the computer and unplug all cables which are connected
   to the PC.
2. If you are unsure of how to disassemble your computer, consult your
   user guide or consult a qualified computer technician.
3. Remove the Samsung 8x DVD-ROM from your PC.
4. Look at the label on the Samsung 8x DVD-ROM drive.
5. If the firmware level is lower than "bi24", you should upgrade.
   Follow the steps shown below in Extracting the update after you
   re-assemble your computer.


Downloading the update
----------------------
1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page.
2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save
   the downloaded file.


Extracting the update
---------------------
Installing this update involves creating a firmware update flash 
diskette and running the flash program from the diskette. Before you 
begin, have a blank 1.44 MB diskette ready.

1. Click Start, highlight Find, then click Files or folders.
2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 
3. Type samsung8x.exe in the search box, click Find Now. This will locate 
   the samsung8x.exe file you just downloaded. 
4. Double-click the icon for samsung8x.exe. 
5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be extracted 
   to the diskette. 


Installing the update
---------------------
1. Close all open applications. 
2. Leave the diskette in the A: drive, and shut down and restart the 
   computer to start the firmware flash program.
3. Follow the online instructions to upgrade your firmware. When the
   update is complete, the screen will return to the A> prompt.
4. Remove the diskette and restart the system.
