OPTIONS by IBM Important: Read the following information if you are installing the HiFD drive in a computer using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 If you are installing the HiFD drive in a computer using Microsoftt Windows NT~ Workstation, you will need the following: • Windows NT 4.0 operating system • Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or higher • IDE controller device driver compatible with the HiFD drive Note: If the HiFD software is installed with an incompatible IDE device driver, the Windows NT operating system will not complete the computer startup (boot) process. • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher Preparing your computer for installation The included HiFD software CD is compatible with the native Microsoft IDE ATAPI controller device driver. However, the operating system will stop operating when attempting to load the desktop if the HiFD software is installed and the lntel~ PCI Bus Master IDE controller is enabled. Before you install the HiFD software, follow these steps: 1. Turn on the computer and note the version of the currently installed Service Pack displayed during startup. If the service pack is lower than Service Pack 4, go to the Microsoft Web site and follow the installation instructions. 2. Click Stan. 3. Point to Settings and click Control Panel. 4. Double-click SCSI Adapters. 5. Click PropertIes. 6. Click the Driver tab. 7. If the Driver File is ATAPI.SYS, click OK twice, close the Control Panel window and go to step 17. 8. If the Driver File is PIIXIDE.SYS or INTELATA.SYS, dick OK twice and continue with step 9. 9. In the Control Panel window, double-click Devices. 10. In the Devices list, find and click piixide or intelata and then click Startup. 11. In the Startup Type panel, click DIsabled and then click OK. 12. In the Devices list, find and click ATAPI ; then dick Startup. 13. In the Startup Type panel, select Boot and click OK. 14. Click Close. 15. Close the Control Panel. 16. Restart your computer to confirm the new settings. Shut down and restart Windows: then repeat this procedure starting with step 2 to confirm the new settings. 17. Close all applications, shut down Windows, and tum off the computer. 18. Follow the installation instructions in the HiFD User’s Guide. Attention: If you install the HiFD drive in a computer using Windows NT 4.0, and the computer stops during startup, use the operating-system recovery procedure on the next page I 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Insert a DOS startup diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 3. At the DOS prompt, type cd c:\winnt4o\system32\drivers and press Enter. 4. Type dir h* and press Enter. 5. Type del hifdnt4.sys and press Enter. 6. Turn off the computer. 7. Remove the DOS startup diskette from the diskette drive. 8. Disable the PIIXIDE.SYS or INTELATA.SYS device driver and enable the using the instructions given on page 1 of this supplement.
