Introduction 2. Restrictions 3. Requirements 4. Files 5. Usage Notes 6. Installation Notes 7. Service Information =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1. Introduction =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DISKETTE USE This Diskette supports the microcode update process for the IBM TR4 Internal (Option PN 06H9716) and External (Option PN 3502-900) SCSI Tape Drives, and IBM TR4 Internal EIDE Tape Drive (Option PN 06H9720). This microcode utility will update the firmware of your TR4 Tape Drive to version 1.22 from version 1.17. This utility is developed for a DOS platform only. The diskette will boot DOS 7.0 with a menu for SCSI and IDE. By default, the menu choice for IDE will be loaded. You must select the choice for SCSI if you have a SCSI TR4 Internal or External Tape Drive. Select IDE if you have an EIDE TR4 Internal Tape Drive. In a SCSI environment, the TR4 Internal or External SCSI Tape Drive must be attached to the SCSI host adapter. ASPI support for your SCSI host adapter must be loaded. Multiple ASPI device drivers are loaded from this diskette that support many IBM SCSI adapters. Only the correct driver will load. All other drivers will cause an error message, which is normal and should be ignored. If the ASPI Managers included with this diskette do not support your installed SCSI adapter, use ASPI support provided by your SCSI adapter and UPGRD.EXE from this diskette to update the microcode of your SCSI TR4 Tape Drive. This image was updated on 4/20/1998. ASPI8DOS.SYS was updated to support the Netfinity 3500. ASPI8DOS.SYS will have a date code of 8/12/97. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2. Restrictions =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The utility is supported in a native DOS environment only. It is not supported in Windows 95, Windows NT, or OS/2. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3. Requirements =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The microcode update utility is developed for a native DOS platform only. The utility can be used with the IBM TR4 Internal EIDE Tape Drive, IBM TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive, or IBM TR4 External SCSI Tape Drive. If a TR4 SCSI Tape Drive is used, the utility will require Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) Managers. This diskette includes ASPI support for many SCSI host adapters. You will need the following: 1 a) Ensure that your IBM TR4 Internal EIDE Tape Drive is properly installed and configured for your system; or b) Ensure that your IBM TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive or IBM TR4 External SCSI Tape Drive is properly installed and configured for your system. Properly terminate the SCSI bus, and load the ASPI Managers for DOS supplied with your SCSI host adapter or provided on this utility diskette. =-=-=-=-=-=-= 4. Files =-=-=-=-=-=-= This section gives information on the files supplied along with the utility. The files supplied include flash update files, microcode update utility, a readme.txt file, and ASPI support drivers. Usage Notes =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section gives information on how the utility is used to update the micro code of the tape drives to the latest revision. Attached is UPGRD.EXE version 2.01. This version checks that the flash file is compatible with the target tape drive before upgrading the firmware. Both checks must match the drive's current Inquiry data with the flash file before UPGRD.EXE will start a flash download. Note: UPGRD will abort download on drives with non-operational code (eg. manufacturing) or with special firmware versions (eg j.21). DO NOT POWER YOUR SYSTEM OFF OR STOP THE UTILITY ONCE YOU HAVE STARTED THE MICROCODE UPDATE. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 7. Installation Notes =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= To update the microcode to your IBM TR4 Internal EIDE Tape Drive, IBM TR4 Internal SCSI Tape Drive, or IBM TR4 External SCSI Tape Drive: 1. Boot from this diskette. 2. Select IDE or SCSI from the menu list depending upon your tape drive. 3. From the DOS command prompt, type UPGRD and Enter A:\>UPGRD The following screen will be presented: upgrd 2.01 - Seagate 4000/8000 firmware upgrade utility usage is: upgrd <0|1|2|3> - name of flash update file - use I for IDE, S for SCSI <0|1|2|3> - Host adapter number SCSI Example: UPGRD FLCN2122.FLS S 0 IDE Example: UPGRD FLCN2122.FLS I 1 4. Depending upon your configuration and tape drive, use the appropriate settings at the DOS command prompt: SCSI Example: UPGRD FLCN2122.FLS S 0 IDE Example: UPGRD FLCN2122.FLS I 0 Note: You may need to change the host adapter number depending upon your system's configuration.
