NOTE: if you have an active Internet connection during this installation, you may also see an option to install the "NEC USB Enhanced Host Controller" This is a Windows XP driver which is automatically downloaded from from the Windows Update site. Either driver is compatible with this Card. ======================= Driver Limitations: ======================= -v2.02 1) No USB 2.0 Isochronous support This driver does not support Ischronous USB 2.0 transfers. Support for these features (required for USB 2.0 high-speed video and audio devices) will be included in future versions of this driver. 2) Composite Devices Some composite USB devices may operate correctly when installed into a USB 2.0 Hub. This limitation should be corrected in future versions of this driver. Solution: connect composite devices directly to the USB 2.0 CardBus Card. 3) Limited USB 2.0 Hub Support Some devices attached to USB 2.0 Hubs may not operate correctly after the laptop returns from standby or hibernation. This limitation should be correct in future verstion of this driver. Solution: disconnect all USB 2.0 Hubs before placing the machine into suspend or hibernation. =============================== Specific Usage Notes =============================== 1) Ejecting the USB 2.0 CardBus Card Windows 98 and Window ME contain limited support for removable (i.e. CardBus type) USB 2.0 controllers. UNSAFE REMOVAL OF THE CARD IN WINDOWS 98 OR WINDOWS ME MAY CAUSE UNRECOVERABLE SYSTEMS ERRORS. To safely remove the card while the system is on you must use the " Safely remove USB 2.0 Card " Icon in your system tray. This feature is installed during the setup program, and will appear whenever the Card in installed. Use this method to notify the OS before removing the card. Once the Operating System has shutdown all communication with the card, you will see a notice indicating that it is safe to remove the card. 2) Limited Suspend / Hibernation support for Windows 98 and Windows ME This device driver may not permit System Standby or Hibernation in all Windows 98 or Windows ME systems. This is intentionally done to protect the system from unstable behavior. If the Windows 98 or Windows ME system does not have the advanced BIOS or power management features to support the USB 2.0 Card during stanby or hibernation, this driver will "reject " the system request for low-power mode. Solution: Remove USB 2.0 devices from the card before attempting suspend / hibernation in Win98. 3) USB 2.0 power management USB 2.0 contains advanced power management features not found in USB 1.1 controllers. Some USB devices may require more bus power than the USB 2.0 host controller can safely deliver. If the USB 2.0 Host controller senses that a specific device is drawing too much power, the USB host controller will disable the port . A "Power Surge / Overcurrent Notification" notifies a user that this USB port has been disabled to prevent the device from interferring with other USB devices on the bus. To reset the port: 1 Remove the device, 2 Click "reset" in the Notification Window 3 Reattach the device to a fully powerd 2.0 USB port or Powered USB 2.0 hub. 4) Compatibility with Windows XP and Windows 2000 drivers Microsoft has recently released Windows XP drivers for NEC USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controllers. They are currently available using the 'Windows Update' features built into Windows XP. If you have an active Internet connection when you install or update the USB 2.0 drivers, Windows XP will download the Microsoft driver and offer it as an installation option. The Windows XP drivers are compatible with the ThinkPad USB 2.0 CardBus Adapter. Either driver may be used. Microsoft is also expected to integrate USB 2.0 support into Windows 2000; once completed, these drivers will also be available to the public on the Windows Update website.
