IBM PC Server / Netfinity server 4.5GB / 9.1GB Hard Drive Update Diskette version 1.04 README PC Server / Netfinity server 4.5GB / 9.1GB Hard Drive Update Diskette Utility is supported with the following adapters: the PCI Adaptec SCSI Controllers the PCI ServeRAID and ServeRAID II Adapters the IBM F/W PCI-Bus RAID Adapter the IBM F/W Streaming RAID (Micro Channel) the 704 Mylex PL Raid Adapter Note:If there are 3 or 4 ServeRAID II adapters installed in the system This is the proceedure to follow: When the system boots and asks which adapter to use, select choice #2. Then when you see the question Would you like to proceed (Y/N); answer n. At the A:> prompt if there are 3 ServeRAID II adapters installed; type in 3serv[enter] With 4 ServeRAID II adapters installed; type in 4serv[enter]. This update does the following: 1. Queries for the adapter type that is attached the hard drives requiring new firmware. Upon finding the hardfiles, the hardfile firmware is updated to level 64. NOTE: Update eliminates a potential problem that would appear as a Sector not found or ECC error when drives are configured in a RAID-0 array on a ServeRAID II Adapter. In the RAID-5 and RAID-1 environments, soft events are logged by the ServeRAID II Adapter. 2. The hard disk drive is then reconfigured to eliminate a potential system hang problem that occurs if the SCSI bus is reset while the hard drive is doing internal error recovery. This program will update the following hard drives: The 4.5 GB 80 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n76H5817 The 4.5 GB 80 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n01K6675 The 9.1 GB 80 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n76H5818 The 9.1 GB 80 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n01K6679 The 4.5 GB 68 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n76H2697 The 9.1 GB 68 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n76H2698 The 4.5 GB 68 Pin SCSI Hard DISK Drive FRU p/n93G2970 The 9.1 GB 68 Pin SCSI Hard DISK Drive FRU p/n93G2972 The 4.5 GB 50 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n76H2695 The 9.1 GB 50 Pin SCSI Hard Disk Drive FRU p/n76H2696 When booted this diskette will search for the suspect drives, and immediately flash the firmware of the hard disk drives requiring this update. Downtime must be scheduled for the server to run this update utility. You must Boot to this utility and it takes approximately 1 minute to flash the firmware on each drive. PROCEDURES: 1. Perform any necessary shutdown procedure for your server and then turn off your server then any external drive enclosures. 2. Insert the IBM PC Server/Netfinity server 4.5GB/9.1GB Hard Disk Drive Update Utility Diskette into your diskette drive. 3. Turn on any external enclosures, then the server. 4. Select the adapter type having the 4.5GB - 9.1 GB Hard Files attached. The program on the diskette automatically checks and updates, if required, the microcode on all hard disk drives connected to the adapters of that type. The procedure takes approximately one minute per hard disk drive. Note: The recently implemented auto scrubbing feature in the ServeRAID II interferes with the flash of the firmware if it is not turned off. This version of the IBM PC Server / Netfinity server 4.5GB-9.1GB Hard Disk Drive Update Utility takes care of this problem for 1 or 2 installed Serve RAID II adapters. When the ServeRAID adapter is selected you will see one of the following messages: Found 1 IBM ServeRAID Adapter(s). Set Data Scrubbing OFF has been initiated for adapter #1... Set Data Scrubbing OFF Successful. or Found 1 IBM ServeRAID Adapter(s). Adapter #1 does not support Data Scrubbing. Set Data Scrubbing On/Off Unsuccessful. 5. When this update is complete, warm boot server. 6. Unless the IBM PC Server/Netfinity server 4.5GB-9.1GB Hard Disk Drive Update Utility returns a message "no files requiring firmware update are present" upon completion, then at least 1 hardfile met the FRU criteria above and was updated to the 64 level firmware. To view the firmware level of the drives on the IBM F/W PCI-Bus RAID Adapter the IBM F/W Streaming RAID (Micro Channel) and the 704 Mylex PL Raid Adapter boot the configuration utility for each and select Display Drive Information then use up and down arrows to highlight individual drives. The Host Adapter BIOS can be enabled on the Adaptec SCSI to show drive information. To make the ServeRAID and the ServeRAID II Adapter reflect this updated firmware when viewing Display Drive Information Option in the ServeRAID Configuration Utility Diskette, perform steps 7 through 12. 7. Verify whether ServeRAID II Adapter already has Arrays defined or not by Booting the PC ServeRAID Configuration Utility that ships with the ServeRAID Adapter and select "View Configuration." 8. If Arrays are defined, follow step a. below then proceed to Step 9. Otherwise, skip to step 9. a. Back up the Current Configuration by booting the PC ServeRAID Configuration Utility. Select Option 7 Advanced Functions. From the Advanced Functions Menu, select Option 2 Backup ServeRAID Config. Type in the NAME of the file to use for saved configuration file. Write down this filename. You may require this filename later in the procedures. 9. Initialize the Configuration by booting to the PC ServeRAID Configuration Utility and select Option 7 Advanced Functions. From the Advance Functions Menu, select Option 7 Init/View/Synchronize Config. Then, select Option 2 Initialize Configuration. 10. When complete, select Option 7 Configuration Synchronization. Then, select Option 4 Hard Disk Drive - HDD as Source. 11. When complete, press ESC until back to the Main Menu to verify that the drives properly indicate the 64 level firmware. Select Option 6 Rebuild/Device Management. Then, select Option 4 Display Drive Information. Each drive that meets the FRU criteria above should indicate a Mode/Product Code with 6464 at the end of this line. 12. If arrays were already defined, then verify with View Configuration that array appears properly. If so, reboot to the operating system. Otherwise, restore configuration from diskette using the file you saved previously. If arrays were not defined, then you are now ready to set up arrays and configure ServeRAID adapter to prepare system for operating system installation. Procedures for this is included in the ServeRAID II Installation Instructions and User's Guide shipped with the ServeRAID II Adapter. NOTE: If a message stating "Refer to README because no hardfiles were found" appears, then ensure that you are using a RAID adapter with drives configured as RDY, ONL, or HSP, or a SCSI Adapter that when put into the configuraion mode recognizes the hard files attached. Also, verify cabling and termination is set properly. If the drive update fails with any kind of error message this does not render drives useless in any way. They can still be used. The drives are most likely updated in the order found up to the drive that failed. There is firmware in the drive that prevents any failures in the flash procedure from allowing an improper update. If the update fails then this should not cause the servicer from continuing his/her task.
