Installing the trial server software ------------------------------------ You can install any of the applications from the trial software CDs by following the instructions given in the startup menu that is displayed when you insert any of the CDs from the trial software package. You can use the trial software for 30 days to determine the best application for you specific needs. At the end of the 30-day trial period, it will be necessary to purchase an unlock key to make the application permanent. To purchase an unlock key, go to the tape drive Web site at http://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/eserver/xseries/tape. and follow the software links. Note: The trial software CDs contain backup applications that are used with other products, but do not apply for this tape drive The complete list of supported configurations are available on the compatibility Web site at http://serverproven.raleigh.ibm.com/compat/storage/tmatrix.html. Before you begin 1-7 If the driver is being re-installed or updated you may be asked to reboot for the driver to take effect. Otherwise no reboot should be needed. The IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE tape drive is now installed and ready to use. ====================================================================== 4.0 Supported Tape Drive Models -------------------------- The list below identifies IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE tape drive models supported by the stidexp.sys driver. i386\stidexp.sys -- IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows XP/2000 32-bit Intel Platforms File date: 10-26-01 File size: 5,504 ia64\stidexp.sys -- IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows XP/2000 64-bit Intel Platforms File date: 10-26-01 File size: 16,512 Tape Drive Models ----------------- STT3401A ====================================================================== 5.0 Installation Overview --------------------- Use this general procedure to install a tape drive in the computer: * Create a driver installation diskette from the file stidexp.exe. * Configure the tape drive's jumpers and install the tape drive in the computer. * Install the tape driver from the IBM tape driver installation diskette. ====================================================================== 6.0 Creating an Installation Diskette from the File stidexp.exe ------------------------------------------------------------ This procedure creates a tape driver installation diskette. It assumes you have downloaded the file stidexp.exe to your system. You also need a formatted, empty diskette. stidexp.exe is a self- extracting 32-bit WinZip program. Note. If you already have a driver installation diskette labeled "IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows XP/2000 32/64-bit Intel Platforms", skip this procedure. 1. Label the diskette: "IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows XP/2000 32/64-bit Intel Platforms". 2. On a Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP, open Windows Explorer. 3. Locate the down-load directory containing stidexp.exe. 4. Double click stidexp.exe to start the self-extractor. 5. You will see a dialog box titled WinZip Self-Extractor [stidexp.exe]. 6. In the Unzip To Folder field, set your floppy drive letter (for example A:). 7. Click the Unzip button. 8. You will see "5 file(s) unzipped successfully", then click OK. 9. Click Close This extracts files and creates the driver installation diskette with the following files (where A: is the floppy drive letter): A:\stidexp.txt This document A:\stidexp.inf Setup information A:\stidexp.cat Catalog file A:\i386\stidexp.sys IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE driver for 32-bit Intel A:\ia64\stidexp.sys IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE driver for 64-bit Intel 10. You may want to write protect the diskette. This completes the installation diskette creation procedure. Return to "Device Driver Installation" above. ====================================================================== 7.0 Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Drive Hardware Configuration -------------------------------------------------- Please pay attention to these hardware configuration considerations for IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE tape drives: Shut down the system and turn power off before installing or configuring hardware. When an IDE hard disc is attached to a primary IDE cable, it is recommended that, when possible, the tape drive be connected to the secondary IDE cable. When two drives (for example a CD-ROM and a Tape drive) share an IDE cable, one must be configured as Master and the other as Slave. Master is sometimes referred to as SCSI Target ID 0, while Slave, is referred to as SCSI Target ID 1. There are two techniques used to configure Master/Slave -- Cable Select, and Explicit Master/Slave Jumper. The Cable Select technique configures one device as Master and the other as Slave by means of the connector to which the device is attached. Typically the device attached to the end of the cable is Master and the device connected to the middle is Slave. There are two requirements for the Cable Select technique to function correctly. 1) The IDE cable must be constructed to support Cable Select (the CSEL line, pin 28, is typically open for the middle connector and grounded for the end connector), and 2) both devices must be configured with jumpers installed on their CS pins. The Explicit Master/Slave Jumper technique permits the drive installer to control which drive is Master and which is Slave. The installer configures one drive as Master by installing the MA jumper, and the other as Slave by installing the SL jumper. Note that some drive models combine Master/Slave configuration with a single jumper. For example, the device is Master when the MA jumper is installed or Slave when the MA jumper is removed. For a single drive configuration, usually the best choice is connection to the end of the cable as a Master device. If you are unsure of the device configuration technique, consult the hardware manuals for both your computer and drives. If you are still unsure, try the Explicit Master/Slave Jumper technique mentioned above. You can verify the configuration by enabling and observing the BIOS's report of IDE and ATAPI devices found, during a system boot. ====================================================================== 8.0 Important Notes --------------- Tape Drive Firmware Version Determination You can find the tape drive firmware version using the Registry Editor (regedit) as follows. 1.
