Fibre Channel Drive Concurrent Dual Port Failure NOTE: This problem may be seen with ONLY the IBM Netfinity FAStT RAID Controller Enclosure Unit, not the IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel RAID Controller. Symptoms when Dual Path Drive failure occurs: a. One or more arrays become dead or inaccessible. b. Multiple physical drives marked dead or replaced. c. Subsystem in a "Fixing" state (in the SMW view moving the mouse pointer over the name of the subsystem will show the word fixing) d. Other possible symptom(s): When attempting to perform some configuration change through SM7 a prompt for password is presented. No password is recognized in this state. NOTE: If any of the above conditions occur, escalate to IBM Support. Other Events that can lead to similar symptoms: a. Losing power to drive enclosures while controller enclosures are still active. b. Redundant cables from controller to drive enclosures disconnected or broken so that both paths are unavailable. Reducing chances/probability of encountering these problems: a. Keeping cables physically separate so that the risk of breaking both paths is minimized. b. Connecting redundant power supplies to different power circuits. c. Use both (all) redundant drive paths (4 loops, 2 loops per redundant path) and spread drive enclosures across the redundant drive paths. d. Having hot spares and replacing failed drives as soon as possible. (minimizes the chance of having an already failed drive when the second failure occurs) Steps to perform after configuring RAID system that will help in recovering from multiple failure states: a. Take a profile snapshot after each configuration change. 1.3 Enhancements N/A 1.4 Prerequisites: - It is a requirement to have support for greater than 8 LUNS installed before continuing with the migration. The steps to do this follow below: 1. To support more than 8 LUNS it is required that the Windows NT service pack 5 or greater be installed. There are additional registry parameters that must be set in the IBM Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter as well as disable the miniport's extended LUN mapping. Refer to the host adapter's readme file for the latest information on these settings. NOTE: You should first make the registry changes for the IBM Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter, per instructions below. Next, download the new NVSRAM file for the controllers. 2. To enable service pack 5 or greater support for more than 8 luns, please use the following procedure after installing the service pack: 1. Click on "Start", select "Run", and open the REGEDT32 program. 2. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and follow the tree structure down to the QLogic driver as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services Ql2100 Parameters Device 3. Double click on "LargeLuns:REG_DWORD:0x00" 4. Change the data value from default 0 to 1 5. Exit the Registry Editor, then shutdown and reboot the system for the changes to take affect. 6. Upon rebooting, run the Host Adapter's embedded FastUtil and set the 'Luns per Target' parameter from 8 to 0. Once Windows NT has booted, the storage management will be able to communicate with the fibre channel subsystem. 1.5 Dependencies: N/A 2.0 Change History -------------------- This is the first release of code for IBM Netfinity FAStT500 RAID Controller Enclosure Unit and an update to SM7 for IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel RAID Controllers. 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- 3.1 Step by step instructions for this code update 1. Install/update the driver for the IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter or the IBM Netfinity FAStT Host Adapter a. Install the Hardware following instructions that come with the adapter. b. Install the IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter or IBM Netfinity FAStT Host Adapter driver by opening the Control Panel. c. Select SCSI Adapters. d. Select Drivers tab. e. Remove the existing IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel Adapter Driver. Do not reboot if prompted. f. Select add and insert the downloaded driver diskette. g. Change the directory to A:\NT. h. Select the IBM Netfinity QL2100 or QL2200 PCI PCI Adapter. i. Select Yes to continue and then yes to install. j. Reboot if necessary. 2. If upgrading from SM 7.0, uninstall existing SM 7 packages a. IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel SM 7 Client Package b. IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel SM 7 Agent Package c. IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel SM 7 RDAC Package d. IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel SM 7 Migrate Package 3. Install new SM 7.01 Packages a. MSVM: Run MSJavx86-5_00_3186.exe and select Yes to install the MSVM Virtual Machine. Select no to replace existing files. When prompted, reboot system. b. RDac: Run SM7RDAC-07002507.exe and change installation directory to C:\RDAC. Click on setup.exe when all files are extracted. Reboot when installation is complete. c. Agent: Run self-extracting file SM7agent-07012501.exe. Change installation directory to C:\AGENT. Double click on setup.exe when al files are extracted. Reboot when installation is complete. d. Client: Run self-extracting file SM7client-07012503.exe. Change installation directory to C:\CLIENT. Double click on setup.exe when all files are extracted. e. Migrate (if necessary). Migration is REQUIRED if controllers are running 6.22. Migration must be performed prior to running SM 7.01. Please refer to the Readme associated with the Migration701. Run SM7Migrate-NT-01072500.exe and change installation directory to C:\MIGRATE. Double click on setup.exe when all files are extracted. f. Verify all arrays/logical drives exist as before. g. Verify that you can communicate with controllers (both if more than one). If unable to communicate with one of the controllers, then you will need to uninstall RDAC and reinstall it again. h. Apply scripts using SM7 Enterprise Management Window. Tools -> Script -> Load -> Execute using appropriate scripts (FactoryDefaults.scr, Winnt4.scr, Softreseton.scr) h 3.2 There is no Host Adapter directory on this CD. Refer to the IBM Support Web site for the latest supported host adapters, device drivers, and updated readme. 3.3 Helpful Hints 1. The IBM Netfinity FAStT Storage Manager will prompt the user for a password if an attempt is made to manage a storage subsystem where the Netfinity FAStT RAID Controller Unit does not have access to any drives. This will occur even if though no password has been setup. The automatic discovery will discover each storage subsystem as two separate storage subsystems.To prevent this from occurring, ensure that at least one Netfinity FAStT500 EXP500 Expansion Unit with at least one drive is properly attached to the Netfinity FAStT500 RAID Controller Unit in each storage subsystem being managed. Since the RAID controller unit should not be powered on until the expansion units are attached and powered on, this should be done by powering off the RAID controller unit, properly attaching all expansion units, with drives installled, to the RAID controller unit and powering them on, and then powering the RAID controller unit back on. At this point the storage subsystem(s) can be re-discovered and managed using the FAStT Storage Manager. 2. If you are unable to see the maximum number of drives during "Automatic Configuration", you should be able to use "Manual Configuration" to select individual drives and select the maximum number of drives allowed. 4.0 Configuration Information ------------------------------- 4.1 Include any configuration installation 4.2 Configuration Settings 1. Large LUN Support requirements The NVSRAM for the controller is set up to support greater than 8 LUNS. The settings on the controller enable parameters to support this Windows NT feature, but requires additional settings to be made. To support more than 8 LUNS it is required that the Windows NT Service Pack 5 or greater be installed. There are additional registry parameters that must be set in the IBM Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapater as well as disable the miniport's extended LUN mapping. Refer to the host adapter's readme file for the latest information on these steps. NOTE: You should first make the registry changes for the IBM Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter, per instructions in Section 1.4 before configuring your arrays. 2. Script files for specific configs - networkon.scr: Enables direct networking to IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers - networkoff.scr: Disables direct networking to IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers - propreseton.scr: Enables propagated reset for Microsoft Clustering environments to IBM Netfinity RAID Controllers (required for clustering) - propresetoff.scr: Disables propagated reset for Microsoft Clustering environments to IBM Netfinity RAID Controllers - softreseton.scr: Enables soft reset setting to IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for Microsoft Clustering environments (required for clustering) - softresetoff.scr: Disables soft reset setting to IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for Microsoft Clustering environments - clusteringoff.scr: Disables IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for Microsoft Clustering - clusteringon.scr: Sets up IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for Microsoft Clustering - lun0off.scr: Turns off LUN 0 creation on IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers. To prevent inadvertant creation of default LUN 0, this script can be downloaded to the controllers. In the event that the controllers attempt to recreate the default LUN 0, this feature will be disabled. The benefit of this script is that the default LUN 0 will not be created over an existing configuration. - lun0on.scr: Turns on LUN 0 creation on IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers - FactoryDefaults.scr: Enables preferred settings for IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers - WinNT4.scr: Enables IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for Windows NT - Windows2000.scr: Enables IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for Windows 2000 - Novell.scr: Enables IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for Novell Netware - UnixWare.scr: Enables IBM Netfinity FC RAID Controllers for SCO UnixWare 4.3 Hardware Status and Information 4.4 Unsupported Configurations The following lists configurations that are currently not being supported with this level of code. 1. Fibre Channel loop environments with the IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel Hub in conjunction with the IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel SAN Switch.
