********************************************************************* * IBM ServeRAID Administration and Monitoring Diskette * * Version 2.80 * ********************************************************************* This README file contains instructions for installing the IBM ServeRAID Administration and Monitoring Program when using Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 95. This version of the ServeRAID Administration and Monitoring Program is referred to as the WIN32-Based Administration and Monitoring Program. NOTES: ----- 1. If you are using Novell NetWare, IBM OS/2, or SCO OpenServer 5.0.X, be sure to read section "1.0 About the ServeRAID Administration and Monitoring Program" in this README file. 2. See the README file on the "IBM ServeRAID BIOS/Firmware Update Diskette" for descriptions of the current ServeRAID diskettes and for detailed information about the changes and enhancements provided with each version. You can create an array, delete an array, create a logical drive, change the raid level, dynamically increase the logical drive size, rebuild an array, and perform other basic ServeRAID configuration functions. Depending upon your network operating system, you can run this program either locally on the server or remotely using TCP/IP. * You can use the WIN32-Based program locally with: o Microsoft Windows NT * You can use the WIN32-Based program remotely using TCP/IP and a Background Server component with: o Microsoft Windows NT o IBM OS/2 Warp Server and OS/2 LAN Server o Novell NetWare 3.12 and 4.1X o SCO OpenServer 5.0.X NOTE: If you use SCO OpenServer, you must perform all administration functions from a remote WIN32-Based client. The OS/2 and NetWare administration programs provide a limited subset of the functions provided in the WIN32-Based Administration and Monitoring Program. A good way to use these operating-system specific programs is to run the OS/2 or NetWare versions of the programs locally on the server, while using the WIN32-Based Program on a remote Windows NT or Windows 95 client. This method enables you to take advantage of the more advanced administration and monitoring functions provided in the WIN32-Based Program. IBM also provides Background Server components. These components enable servers that are running OS/2, NetWare, or SCO OpenServer to act as the TCP/IP interface for the remote WIN32-Based Program. NOTES: ----- 1. The ServeRAID device drivers, administration programs, and Background Server components for OS/2 and NetWare are provided on the "IBM ServeRAID Device Driver and Administration/Monitoring Diskette". 2. The ServeRAID device driver and Background Server component for Windows NT are provided on the "IBM ServeRAID Device Driver and Administration/Monitoring Diskette". 3. The SCO OpenServer device driver and Background Server component are provided on the "IBM ServeRAID SCO OpenServer Boot-Time Loadable Diskette". _____________________________________________________________________ 2.0 Installing the WIN32-Based Administration and Monitoring Program ______________________________________________________________________ This section contains instructions for installing the WIN32-Based Administration and Monitoring Program. NOTE: For the instructions needed to install the Background Server components that will enable you to use this WIN32-Based program remotely, see the README file on the "IBM ServeRAID Device Driver and Administration/Monitoring Diskette". The ServeRAID WIN32-Based Administration and Monitoring Program supports the administration and monitoring of both clients and servers. Before you begin the installation, review the following information: o The WIN32-Based program requires an available Windows NT or Windows 95 workstation on the network. o You must install and run the Background Server component, which acts as the TCP/IP interface, if you want to administer a ServeRAID adapter or controller remotely. In addition, the TCP/IP protocol must be running on both the client and the server for the program to connect with the background server. o At any given time, only one remote session can access ServeRAID adapters or controllers using the Background Server component. It is possible to run multiple Background Server components with each component using a different TCP/IP port; however, to avoid data corruption, you must restrict your administration activities to one remote client and use the other remote clients for monitoring purposes only. o If you use Windows NT on your server, you can use the WIN32-Based program locally on the server. You can have a local session and a remote session active simultaneously. o The Background Server task provides basic information about remote connections only. o Remote sessions can use dial-up functions, if required. For example, if you are using Windows 95, the remote session can use the Windows Dial-up Networking function. To install the ServeRAID WIN32-Based program: --------------------------------------------- 1. Turn on the server and allow Windows NT or Windows 95 to boot. Insert the "ServeRAID Administration and Monitoring Diskette" into the diskette drive. 2. Click on START, click on RUN; then, type the following: A:\SETUP and press Enter. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. ___________________________________________________________________ 3.0 Starting the WIN32-Based Administration and Monitoring Program ___________________________________________________________________ To gain access to the ServeRAID adapters and controllers, double-click on the IPSRAID Admin-Monitor icon on the Windows client or select IBM ServeRAID Administration from the start menu. After the administration and monitoring program loads, the Main window appears: o If you are running the program in the stand-alone mode and you have ServeRAID adapters or controllers installed in your system, the current settings of the installed adapters or controllers will appear on the screen. o If you are running the program from a client with no ServeRAID adapters or controllers, a message will appear stating that no ServeRAID adapters or controllers are installed in your system. To gain access to the server that contains the ServeRAID adapters or controllers: 1. Select Network Settings from the Options menu. A window appears prompting for Stand-alone or Client/Server. 2. Select the Client/Server radio button. 3. Type the Hostname of the server that you want to access in the edit box or select it from the pull-down list; then, click on Connect. If security is enabled on the server, you must enter a valid UserName and Password. ____________________________________________________________________ 4.0 Using the WIN32-Based Administration and Monitoring Program _________________________________________________________________ Refer to your "IBM ServeRAID Adapter Installation Instructions and User's Guide" or your "User's Handbook" for step-by-step instructions to use the ServeRAID Administration and Monitoring Program. _____________________________________________________________________ 5.0 Trademarks and Notices ___________________________ The following terms are trademarks of the IBM Corporation in the United States or other countries or both: IBM Netfinity OS/2 ServeRAID Microsoft, Windows, and Windows NT are trademarks or registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation.
