**************************************************************************** UNIXWARE.TXT ***************************************************************************** This is the Installation Guide for the LSI Logic Fusion-MPT (TM) Driver with the Caldera UnixWare 7 and Open Unix 8 Operating Systems. Both of these operating systems will hereafter be referred to as "UnixWare". Older versions of the operating system are not supported. This file describes the features and use of the LSI Logic Fusion-MPT device driver. The driver is referred to as "mpt". NOTE: Driver files are labeled uw103xx.Z, uw103xx.dd, etc. The "xx" refers to the last two digits of the actual driver version number. For instance, files associated with mpt driver version 1.03.04 will be labeled uw10304.Z, uw10304.dd, etc. Introduction Features LSI Logic Devices Supported Description Installing the UnixWare mpt Driver New System Installation Existing System Installation Troubleshooting ******************************* Introduction ******************************** UnixWare extends the Unix SVR4.2 operating system. Features include a graphical user interface (GUI), networking, application compatibility, multitasking and multi-user capabilities, and multiprocessor support. The mpt driver allows UnixWare operating systems to interface with devices connected to the LSI Logic Fusion-MPT family of chipsets and/or LSI Logic Fusion-MPT host adapter boards. The mpt driver features support for the the Ultra320 LSI53C1030 and LSI53C1020 chipsets, the Fibre Channel LSIFC929X, LSIFC919X, LSIFC929, LSIFC919, and LSIFC909 chipsets, and their associated host adapter boards. The following sections describe the procedures to install the driver during a first time installation of UnixWare, or to update a currently installed system with this driver. Note: Current UnixWare drivers can be downloaded from the LSI Logic web site at http://www.lsilogic.com. After you are connected to this web site, place your cursor on the Get Drivers option in the menu bar. Click on the Drivers selection. Choose the UnixWare operating system for Ultra320 or Fibre Channel and click on the Go button. Follow the instructions on subsequent screens to download the driver. * * * * * * * * * * * * Features * * * * * * * * * * * The mpt driver supports these features: o Easy installation using UnixWare tools o Multiple host adapters o Multiple and non-contiguous Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) support o Dynamic interrupt mapping o Scatter/Gather o Pass-through functionality o Multiprocessor support o 1 Bus with 15 SCSI devices supported. o 8 Buses with 15 Fibre Channel devices/bus supported. * * * * * * * * * LSI Logic Devices Supported * * * * * * * * The mpt driver supports the following devices and their associated LSI Logic host adapters: o LSI53C1030 o LSI53C1020 o LSIFC929X o LSIFC919X o LSIFC929 o LSIFC919 o LSIFC909 * * * * * * * * * * * * Description * * * * * * * * * * * The mpt driver for UnixWare operating systems is available on a 3.5-inch diskette labeled mpt UnixWare driver. Use this diskette to load the driver during the installation of the operating system, or to access attached devices after a UnixWare installation. The following sections describe these procedures. ******************* Installing the UnixWare mpt Driver **************** This section provides installation instructions for new and existing UnixWare systems. * * * * * * * * * New System Installation * * * * * * * * * 1. Boot the computer using the installation diskettes or the installation CDROMs delivered in the UnixWare Operating System media kit. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen. 3. Insert the mpt driver diskette when prompted to insert a host adapter diskette. The system loads the required drivers, such as mpt, and indicates when they are loaded. At the end of the installation, you will see a prompt to reinsert the HBA driver diskette. 4. Insert the mpt driver diskette and press Enter. The kernel builds and the installation terminates. 6. Remove the driver diskette when prompted to do so and reboot the system. * * * * * * * * * Existing System Installation * * * * * * * * Before you install the mpt driver, make a backup copy of the existing kernel. The backup and installation procedures follow: 1. Log on as root. 2. At the shell prompt type: cp /stand/unix /stand/unix.safe Use this copy of the old kernel to reboot the system if the driver installation fails. Refer to the section titled Troubleshooting for more information. 3. Once the old kernel is saved, insert the mpt UnixWare driver diskette. 4. Load the driver using the pkgadd command by typing: pkgadd -d diskette1 5. Select the mpt package. The mpt driver on this diskette is then loaded onto the system. The system will again prompt you to load a driver even if loading was successful. 6. Type q (quit) and press Enter. 7. Verify that the driver is now loaded successfully by typing: pkginfo mpt 8. The package information should read: system mpt LSI Logic IHV HBA After the mpt package is loaded, a message may appear that indicates a system reboot is necessary. 9. To reboot, type this command: init 6 During the boot process, the operating system scans the system and lists the devices found. If the kernel panics during boot, reboot the system with the saved copy of the old kernel. Booting from the saved copy of the kernel is described in the next section titled Troubleshooting. If the reboot is successful, the system is ready to use. * * * * * * * * * * Troubleshooting * * * * * * * * * * This section describes how to utilize the backup copy of the kernel. * * * Problem * * * Driver Installation Fails. * * * Solution * * * To utilize the unix.safe kernel file that was created before installing the mpt driver, follow these steps. 1. Reboot the system. 2. Wait for the UnixWare Logo screen to appear, then press the space bar to begin an interactive boot session. 3. When the interactive boot prompt appears, type: boot unix.safe The UnixWare Logo screen will reappear. The system will then boot from the kernel file unix.safe.
