This is unpredictable, but has been traced many times to a failure of the third-party vendor provided hypercfg utility that RDM uses to query and setup the RAID array, if the hard drives are configured in a RAID array. The conditions necessary for the problem to manifest are: 1. HS40 blade that has hard drives configured as RAID 1 2. Running any RDM task that includes a scan.bat command in its task commandlist. A new hypercfg utiltiy, "RDM 4.11 Update 3 HyperCfg version 3.7 patch" is being released, and is available for download from the IBM web site. This fix is mandatory for HS40 blades that contain Fujitsu made drives; it is recommended for all other situations, even where HS40blades are not being processed. HS40 blades MUST be updated to at least BIOS code version 1.45A or later (build ID SBJT45A). Use the management-module Web-based user interface to verify the BIOS code build ID 2.0 INSTALLATION ----------------- The package provided in this update is a self-extracting executable file. To install the update, one must be logged onto the system with an operating-system account that has at least local administrator privileges. Complete the following steps to install the update: These instructions assume that RDM is installed in the default location. If RDM is installed in a different location, then users will need to adjust these instructions to point to the correct locations. 1. Run the executable. This will extract the files in the package to a temporary location. 2. Copy the file, hypercfg.exe, to the location: c:\Program Files\IBM\rdm\local\env\71s 3. Run the mkimages.bat file by typing opening a command prompt session and running "mkimages" from the directory c:\Program Files\IBM\rdm\local\env 3.0 ISSUES RESOLVED BY THIS UPDATE ----------------------------------- The RDM update addresses APAR IC42587. 4.0 KNOWN PROBLEMS, LIMITATIONS, AND WORKAROUNDS ------------------------------------------------ Even using this new version of hypercfg.exe, tasks will occasionally fail when accessing the IDE RAID adapter. Should the task fail,it will be necessary to remotely "power off" the failing blade using its management module interface. This can be done from the IBM Director interface to the blade. 5.0 SUPPORT WEB SITES ---------------------- The following Web pages provide resources for understanding, using, and troubleshooting RDM and systems-management tools. o IBM RDM 4.11 Web page: http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/xseries/systems_management /sys_migration/rdm.html This Web page presents an overview of RDM.
