CATEGORY: ECA DESCRIPTION: ECA 059 - Parity Check Errors (03/91) Machines Affected: 8570 Models A61/A21/B21/B61 The Personal System/2 8570 Models A61, A21, B61 and B21 may experience intermittent memory Parity Errors. These errors normally occur at POST, or shortly after POST, and during system operations. Operating Systems (Control Programs) will indicate the parity error using different messages: DOS - "Parity Check 1" OS/2 - Will display a trap 0002 error and the message: "The system detected a hardware memory error on the system board. The system stopped. Run the diagnostics supplied with your system to determine the cause of your problem." **TRAP 0002** (Extraneous information here) ERRCD=0001 (Extraneous information here) AIX - "NMI_ERR: MEMORY PARITY ERROR" XENIX & UNIX - "PANIC: NMI: ERROR: MEMORY FAILURE-PARITY ERROR" NOTE: If the XENIX OR UNIX systems have a file called "OEM.0 DRIVER" or are at version 2.34 or higher, the following message will also be included. "NON MASKABLE INTERRUPT, CAUSE = XX", XX = any character Ensure that all software operating systems have the latest upgrades applied. Examples: OS/2 1.1 Extended requires WR03089 corrective service diskette (CSD) OS/2 1.2 Extended requires WR04098 CSD. Advanced diagnostics must be run to eliminate any solid hardware failures. Memory is usually the cause of this problem and should be eliminated as not to be the source of this failure. Memory is not covered by this Service Update. If memory is determined not to be the cause of this failure, replace the system board using the following criteria: 1) Model's A21 or A61 must have system board (P/N 15F7657) installed. Models's B21 or B61 must have system board (P/N 64F0122) installed. 2) Either system board must have a date code of 8933CP, or higher, printed on the module (location U142). a) 89 = year, 33 = week, CP = plant location b) U142 is the longest module located next to the inner-most memory module, socket J17. c) The processor card does not have to be removed to see the date code 3) The system must have memory installed in more than one system board socket. For the error to occur, more than one SIMM must be plugged onto the system board. Systems with one SIMM on the system board, or systems with one SIMM on the system board and the rest on a memory adapter, are not covered by this service update. Order system board FRU P/N 92F0580 for 8570 Model A61 & A21. Order system board FRU P/N 92F0581 for 8570 Model B61 & B21. Warranty Submission ------------------- For warranty and post warranty machines, submit proper documentation (proof of purchase) and a Parts Exchange/Warranty Reimbursement form with the following special information: Field Information Type of Warranty - 0X (not used on PartnerLink) Transaction Code, Box (4) Service Performed - 2 Transaction Code, Box (5) Model # SP17017 Serial # Required Special Instructions/Comments Memory Parity Error The remaining procedures for completing the form are the same. Labor will be reimbursed at $107.00 per machine. *********************************************************************
